The diagnostics presently used in the experiments can be divided into three groups: current and voltage monitors; extreme ultraviolet (XUV) and x-ray diodes and spectrographs for monitoring the load and backlighter X pinch radiation; and x-ray, XUV, and optical imaging of the load, including x-ray backlighting. Many of the diagnostics used are standard and do not need description here. These are listed in Tables I and II with specifics relevant to their use on COBRA. In the article we emphasize the diagnostics especially developed for the COBRA experiments, including a two frame X pinch-based x-ray backlighter system, load voltage measurements, and several different types of crystal spectrographs.
